Extend the Life of your Air Conditioner

Extend the Life of your Air Conditioner

Having your air conditioner repaired can be so expensive nowadays. Thankfully, there are tried and tested tips that will not only keep your trusty air conditioner running in perfect condition, but also running for years to come. By putting these tips into practice regularly and properly, you can put off repair jobs and even the dreaded replacement for the foreseeable future.

  • Change your air filter. The filter in your air conditioner works in two ways: first is that it helps ‘scrub’ the air being pumped from and into your house free of dust and dirt, making it cleaner and healthier to breathe. The second is that it prevents dust and dirt from getting into the internal mechanisms of your air conditioner. If your air filter is old and choked with dust, it will force your unit to work harder than necessary. The accumulated dust can actually get into your AC unit, clogging up its insides and causing wear and tear. This can easily cause your AC to break down.
  • Clear your grilles and registers of any dust and blockages. Dust accumulation and dirt buildup in your duct system’s grilles and registers can cause them to be blocked up, thus choking off the natural air flow within your air conditioning unit. This makes your AC work harder, which can result in an unforeseen breakdown. Preventing this involves regularly cleaning your ductwork’s grilles and registers, preferably after turning your AC unit off.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clean. If your air conditioner is the type that requires an outside unit,  make sure that it’s clean and protected from the elements as much as possible. Clip any bushes growing around it to prevent them from growing over or into the unit. Have it covered by a net or a grille to keep animals away. By keeping its outdoor unit free of any foreign matter, both inside and outside, you can extend the life of your air conditioner.
  • Have your air conditioner looked at and repaired by a professional at the first sign of trouble. This particular tip is something that you should only do if your air conditioner keeps on acting up or breaking down. By choosing to have it looked at much earlier, you prevent the problem – whatever it is – from getting worse and causing a permanent breakdown.
